I’ve recently moved to Derby from Portugal and will be working as a Junior Clinical Fellow across Respiratory, Gastroenterology and Diabetes.
My boyfriend, a Neurologist in the Stroke Unit, has also recently started at the trust. We made the move to the UK as we both wanted to experience working internationally throughout our careers. We were also keen to work together so being under the same roof at Derby was the perfect opportunity.
We are both looking forward to learning different approaches to medicine – it’s always good to challenge yourself and be taken out of your comfort zone! I have been working in Portugal as a GP so the Junior Clinical Fellow role at Derby will be a good opportunity to see how the healthcare system works together in the UK.
For those thinking about a move to the UK I’d encourage them to think about what their careers goals and ambitions are and also work/life balance. We picked Derby as there’s lots to do away from work, culture, sports and a national park nearby – we’re looking forward to exploring more!
For me it was important to pick a UK location that meant I could still feel close to home so having an international airport nearby (East Midlands) with a direct flight to Portugal is fantastic.
We’re both really enjoying our time in Derby, everyone has been very welcoming and supportive.
