The Medicine for the Elderly department has developed and expanded considerably over the past 5 years. There are 3 acute inpatient geriatric wards on the Royal Derby hospital site. Alongside this we have a daily presence on the Medical Assessment Unit as part of the specialty take system here at Derby.
To help at the interface between the front door and community we were the first hospital in the country to develop an innovative, multi-disciplinary Frail Elderly Assessment Team (FEAT). Working across ED, MAU & short stay wards the FEAT team highlight frail older patients and are now able to discharge over 70% of patients who previously would have been admitted. This multi-disciplinary team was nominated for a national HSJ award and been highlighted by the Kings Fund, ECIST and HSJ as an example of innovative best practice.
We have specialist clinics for falls and frailty (rapid access) and Parkinson’s disease (Winners Hospital Doctor Parkinson’s Disease Team of the Year 2007, National Parkinson’s Foundation Centre of Excellence). We have also introduced a ‘virtual ward’ to support early patient discharge working across both acute and community settings.
