The maintenance department, run by Skanska Facilities Services, covers the upkeep and service of the both the Royal Derby Hospital and the London Road Community Hospital.
A team of 64 staff, working a 24-hour service, manage a variety of jobs which span from the unblocking of a sink to the complete service of an industrial boiler.
The department covers two sources of work: reactive calls and proactive maintenance. Each month, it will receive between 4,000 and 5,000 across a number of areas:
- Grounds and Garden
- Building and joinery
- Painting and decorating
- Mechanical and electrical
Along with reacting to calls, staff will perform routine maintenance in each of the areas.
The department also operates the Royal Derby Hospital’s helipad. Helipad staff work on general hospital maintenance unless they receive a message on their pager alerting them to an incoming air ambulance helicopter.
There are two four-man teams which work on the helipad. They are fully trained in firefighting techniques and in high-level rescue, being able to abseil over the side of buildings in the event of an incident.
Helipad staff also perform routine service work, checking firefighting and personal protective equipment regularly.
The maintenance department is also responsible for the fire alarm system in both hospitals, running regular tests each week.
