The catering services at the Royal Derby Hospital are currently run by ISS facilities services.

They are split into two main areas: back and front of house. Back of the house is the kitchen area, where food is prepared and front of the house is the hostesses who deliver meals to patients across the 44 wards of the hospital.

In total, the catering operation is run by more than 200 staff, which includes:

  • 170 hostess staff
  • 22 kitchen staff
  • 3 diet chefs
  • 21 supervisors and managers

Patients give their food orders on electronic tablets. These are then downloaded to the back of house staff after breakfast and mid-afternoon for supper.

The catering department prepares and delivers around 2,500 patient meals a day and more than 1 million meals a year in total. Each patient is served three meals a day and drinks and snacks are offered on request.

There are 14 menus, all in line with British dietetic guidelines offering a nutritious balanced diet. All menus are reviewed seasonally and cover all special diets, modified consistency diets and a broad range of cultural cuisines. The food orders are sent to wards and served by the ward’s hostess team.

In 2015, the team was awarded the highest possible five-star hygiene rating after a visit by inspectors from Derby City Council.
